Who is Fred Outa?

Fred Outa was born in the village of Kipiyo near Kisumu, Kenya.  Fred’s mother died when he was three years old and his father died when Fred was in 8th grade.  After Fred’s father died, Fred began to live  as a street boy having to dig for food from others garbage.

When Fred was 16, an American couple who began work with street boys, took Fred into their home and sent Fred back to school.  After high school, the couple sent Fred to the United States to receive a college education.  While in the United States, Fred earned 3 degrees.

A COMMITMENT TO ORPHANS

While in America, Fred Outa constantly thought about his life and experience as a street boy. He was haunted with memories of all those children who were orphaned and still living on the streets in Kenya. Fred made a promise in his heart to spend his life working for and with orphan children of Kenya.

There are 500,000 children in Kibera. 100,000 are orphans. Not all children have a school to attend.

Homes are 9ft x 9ft. Notice the goat in the lower left-hand corner. People and animals look for food in same GARBAGE HEAPS.

KIBERA SLUM

While Fred was attending college in the United States, he would take summers off and return to Africa.  Fred located some government land next to Kibera Slum which is located in Nairobi, Kenya.  Kibera is now the largest slum in Africa.  This slum is one square mile and home to almost one million people.  Five hundred thousand of Kibera’s residents are under the age of 15.

One hundred thousand of these children are orphans.  The average size of a home in Kibera is 9ft X 9ft. These homes have two  to twelve people livng in them. There is no running water, no electricity, and no sewage system.  It is here, in Kibera, that Fred Outa decided he would begin his life’s work.
